Tables and Chairs
Designing and building a table, chair or a table and chair set is a complex process. It starts with the client describing in detail what the piece will be used for, where it will reside and which specific features are desired in the finished product. For a chair, the ergonomics of fit can be especially challenging. It is extremely important that the craftsman and the client come to a mutual understanding of what the client expects in the way of function, style, materials, dimensions (footprint) and how the finished product will complement the space it will inhabit. As such, the process involves a client interview followed by a series of design sketches and drawings to narrow down the variables involved. Only after the client has approved and signed off on a final design, can an estimate of price and delivery schedule be prepared.
Because clients seldom have a complete understanding of what they expect from the piece, what their possible options are, nor what costs are involved, this process can take several iterations of discussion and preliminary design. As such, there is a charge for this design and estimate, usually on the order of $150 for up to 10 hours of interview and design that will result in a set of fully-dimensioned drawings produced using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) program and a rough estimate of the cost and materials required.
Further, in the case of an original design or a replica chair, clients usually need to sit in the chair to make a final decision. As such, a prototype chair is often advisable, which is usually made with mockup materials.
