Platters
Platters come in all sizes but essentially the same shape. They can be functional or decorative, depending on how much embellishment is involved. Typically the platters I make are limited to 12 inches or smalller in diameter.
The platter shown here with the tree inlay and decorative rim is very labor intensive and was turned from 12 x 3 inch maple stock. The price range of this type of platter is $350 to $500 depending on the diameter and detail involved. I hand draw my inlays, so they are always an original design.
Platters exceeding 12 inches in diameter are available but priced on a case by case basis.
A popular platter style uses two contrasting species glued together on their faces. The platter is turned to reveal the bottom species in the center while the top species forms a wide rim. Depending on the thickness of the blank, the platter can reveal both species on the top and bottom.
Price range for a two-species platter turned in the style described is $250 to $400, depending on the species used.
Simple, 5 to 6 inch bread-plate-sized platers, made from common species range from $50 each with discounts available when purchased in sets of 6 to 8 platters.
